Our Gravel wheel ranking
Season 2024
The best wheels for gravel and wilderness

When choosing wheels for a gravel bike, the key question is to determine the difficulty of the trails and, consequently, the planned tire width. The gravel bike has evolved significantly in recent years, initially targeting riding on technically undemanding gravel, woods and roadless trails. Nowadays, one increasingly notices the use of gravel bikes also on more difficult circular routes.

In allroad/roadplus applications, where driving is mainly on gravel-forest and asphalt roads, tires in the range of about 36 - 42 mm work very well, providing adequate grip and low rolling resistance. For such tires, a rim with an inner width of at least 21 mm or wider is recommended. For more difficult routes, it is recommended to use wider tires and a wider rim of at least 24 mm. This will allow the wheel to work more effectively off-road.

The choice of hubs is important for the durability of wheels, especially in variable and demanding conditions. It is important that the hubs are solidly sealed to prevent sand, water or dirt from entering them. We recommend and use DT Swiss and Evanlite hubs, which are well sealed and made of quality materials.

In terms of spokes, as a base we use the proven Sapim D-Light model, which has a great low weight-strength ratio. For more demanding conditions, such as ultra racing, mountain trails, or for heavier users, the stronger Sapim Race spokes are recommended along with more durable brass nipples. The wheels will be a few tens of grams heavier, but durable for a very demanding purpose.

The following models of wheels from our offer definitely deserve to be called one of the best in their price category. Each model can be customized in the configurator - which makes it possible, for example, to modify the hubs or spokes in accordance with the wheel components we recommend.

The GR 531 rim is characterized by high strength and a high weight limit. The internal width of 24 mm, allows the use of a variety of gravel tires. These wheels will be perfect as a universal gravel set, adapted for a variety of routes - fast gravel as well as more demanding trails. DT Swiss R 500

Our comment

Perfect for gravel and wilderness riding is the lightweight DT R 500 rim with a high weight limit of 130 and an internal width of 22 mm. We recommend its use with tires in the 32 - 42 mm range. This model will work great as allroad wheels. On the other hand, if you want more demanding trails and wider tires, we recommend another previously recommended wheel model DT GR 531.

DT Swiss G 540

Weight: 1760 - 1850 grams (various configurations)

Our comment

The wheels are built based on the DT G 540 rim, which in terms of performance is similar to the top aluminum model GR 531 (inner width of 24 mm). The G 540 model is several tens of grams heavier, but at the same time more affordable. These wheels are dedicated to a variety of gravel trails, providing versatility of use. For more demanding trails (circular trails, bikepacking), we recommend choosing stronger Sapim Race spokes along with brass nipples in the configurator. This configuration will improve not only the strength, but also the performance of the wheels on more difficult terrain.
